Ms. Jal Maya Singar’s journey from a rural village in Bagmati Rural Municipality, Lalitpur, Nepal, to becoming a successful and motivated educator is truly inspiring. Born 31 years ago, Jal Maya has dedicated 13 years of her life to the teaching profession.
She began her teaching career in 2011 at a private school, where she taught various subjects until 2019. In 2019, she successfully passed the Teacher Service Commission examination, a significant milestone that led her to transition to a public school in the remote Ramechhap district. In 2022, she made another move to Bhattedanda Basic School, where she has been making a difference ever since.
Jal Maya’s academic achievements include a master’s degree in political science and a bachelor’s degree in education with a focus on the English language. Alongside her professional growth, she also groomed a family; and is a proud mother of a 4-year-old child.
Despite her confidence and smart personality, Jal Maya faced challenges in teaching English due to the students’ lack of basic knowledge in the subject. While shifting to Government School she observed stark contrast in teaching environments between the private school and the public school highlighted the need for a shift in the approach to education.
Observing the lack of materials development and the prevalence of traditional lecture methods in government schools, Jal Maya realized the importance of innovative pedagogy and curriculum implementation. She questioned the allure of private schools over public ones and recognized the need for change.
Jal Maya’s turning point came with basic training, covering classroom management, materials development, innovative pedagogy, and curriculum implementation. This training not only transformed her teaching methods but also influenced her colleagues. After 10 days Teacher capacity Building Training related to basic/classroom learning environments, the initiation of materials-rich classrooms and active student involvement brought a positive change in the school environment. The shift towards interactive learning, guided by a well-structured curriculum and teacher guides provided by REED Nepal, proved to be effective.
Jal Maya embraced various teaching techniques, including songs, storytelling, project works, and other activities, to enhance content knowledge and foster soft skills among her students. The revitalized approach not only improved the quality of education but also instilled a sense of responsibility among students towards caring for their school environment.
As Jal Maya eagerly awaits subject-wise training to further elevate her teaching skills, she acknowledges the need for continuous support and training from organizations like REED Nepal and Woord en Daad. She encourages them to persist in providing such valuable training to educators, fostering a continuous cycle of improvement in teaching standards and education quality.
In conclusion, Jal Maya Singar’s success story exemplifies the transformative power of dedicated educators and the positive impact they can have on students and the education system. Her journey from a rural village to becoming a catalyst for change in the education sector is a testament to the importance of ongoing training and support for teachers. She is thankful to REED Nepal and Woord en Daad for capacity building and supporting in the enhancement of teaching and learning.
