The Rural Education and Environment Development Centre (REED Nepal) is a non-governmental organization established in 2000 with the motto “Quality Education, Our Commitment.” It was founded to institutionalize the Teacher Training Programs initiated by the Himalayan Trust New Zealand (also known as Hillary Himalayan Trust NZ). Since its inception, REED Nepal has carried forward the legacy of Sir Edmund Hillary, working extensively across the Mount Everest and Himalayan regions.
Till the date, REED Nepal works in partnership with 822 community schools across 29 districts in Nepal, directly supporting 6,183 teachers, 2,21,621 children, 45,816 families, 1,319 child clubs, 7,398 SMC members, 9,042 PTA members, and 149 youths.
As a leading organization in the field, REED Nepal focuses on quality education, environmental sustainability, disaster risk reduction, and livelihood enhancement. It works in close coordination with federal, provincial, and local governments, as well as local communities, to promote inclusive and equitable education in rural schools. Its programs emphasize Early Childhood Education and Development (ECED), school management improvement, teacher capacity building, remedial and alternative learning support, Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) mainstreaming, and school-based Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) interventions.
Currently, REED Nepal is partnering with a wide range of national and international agencies, including the Karuna Trust UK, Karuna Deutschland Ev., BMZ Germany, Nepal Australian Friendship Association (NAFA), DESWOS Germany, and Woord en Daad (Netherlands). Together with these partners, REED Nepal is fostering sustainable, inclusive, and resilient schools and communities through education-focused development.
REED Nepal’s previous partners were the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Australian Himalayan Foundation (AHF), Himalayan Trust UK (HTUK), , Japan Fund for Global Environment (JFGE), Strive 2 Thrive, Friends of Himalayan Sherpa People (FHSP), Transforming Children into Champions (TraC), Western Sydney University Australia, and many more national and international agencies.
REED Nepal has identified five strategic priorities to be achieved by 2026:
These priorities aim to enhance educational quality outcomes and accessibility, promote environmental conservation and climate change adaptation, support livelihood initiatives to help communities in times of crisis, advance inclusivity and gender equity, and strengthen institutional growth through evidence-based policy advocacy and innovation. Through these efforts, REED Nepal is committed to enabling lifelong learning, effective service delivery, and meaningful support to the most vulnerable and marginalized populations.
