Empowering Education in Ganga Jamuna: A Path Toward Lasting Change
The Ganga Jamuna Model Schools Project is a community-driven educational initiative being implemented in Wards 1 and 2 of the Ganga Jamuna Rural Municipality, Dhading, Nepal. Jointly supported by the Nepal Australia Friendship Association (NAFA) and REED Nepal, the project aims to strengthen public school education through teacher capacity-building, promotion of English Medium Instruction (EMI), resource distribution, and student leadership development. Centered around eight local public schools, this multi-year program seeks to create a sustainable, inclusive, and empowering learning environment for rural children.
From Silence to Confidence: A Teacher’s Journey
When Ms. Mamita Tamang, a dedicated teacher at Pasang Chowk Secondary School, first joined the English Medium Instruction (EMI) training, she found it challenging to speak even a full sentence in English. Like many of her colleagues, her exposure to spoken English had been minimal, and using it in the classroom felt overwhelming.
However, Ms. Tamang’s deep commitment to her students drove her forward. She actively participated in every training session, engaged in mentoring opportunities, and practiced consistently. Her progress, though gradual, has been steady and inspiring.
Day by day, she is gaining more confidence in using English while teaching. Her classroom interactions are becoming more dynamic, and her students are responding with greater enthusiasm. Beyond the classroom, Ms. Tamang has also begun taking on leadership roles within her schools - supporting fellow teachers, contributing to planning meetings, and helping guide student activities.
Reflecting on her journey, she shares, “This project didn’t just train me - it gave me the confidence to grow, lead, and keep learning.”
